Learn to Become a Teacher!

A critical component of online teacher education at Marian University is the opportunity for you to learn how to become a teacher through in-the-classroom training.  This supervised classroom exposure happens during both field and clinical experiences in your community. You’ll learn how to apply what you’ve learned in a hands-on environment through mentorship from an on-site teacher and observations completed by a Marian University supervisor. 

This real-world experience ensures that graduates are confident and prepared to lead a classroom.   

  • Practice skills and demonstrate knowledge through experiences that allow for practical application of theory  
  • Work with children in grades 1-8 or K-12 and reflect on and discuss those experiences in class 
  • Observe master teachers and study their instructional style, approaches to the planning-teaching- assessment cycle, and classroom management 
  • Plan and teach lessons to meet the needs of all students

Marian University offers two 100% online MAE programs for those aspiring to become teachers.

The MAE Special Education program is perfect for bachelor’s degree holders who want to follow their passion into a new career, paraprofessionals, and current licensed teachers wanting to specialize in special education.  Graduates will be prepared to teach students with special needs in grades K-12. Completion of the entire program leads to a Master of Arts in Education degree in Special Education with a license in cross categorical with a concentration in specific learning disabilities. 

As a student in the MAE Special Education program, you will prepare to meet the diverse learning needs of students as a licensed special education teacher in grades K-12. The special education focus provides a framework that will empower you to enhance the classroom experience and learning capabilities of students with disabilities. Finish your online coursework, field experiences, and student teaching in about two years. As a student in the program, you’ll complete your courses online and apply that knowledge through field experiences and full-time clinical practice within schools. 

Wisconsin DPI Licensure: Special Education for Cross Categorical (801) and Specific Learning Disabilities (811).  

 **To earn a teaching license, a graduate must seek licensure from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.  

You’ll take online courses that cover topics such as: 

  • Exceptional education etiology
  • Collaboration and co-teaching 
  • Literacy intervention
  • Social-emotional support and mental health
  • IEPs and transition plans 

To help develop your confidence in the classroom 90 hours of field teaching experiences and a semester of student teaching provide hands-on learning.

  • SPE 621A Literacy Interventions: Basic Reading – 20 hr. field experience
  • SPE 634B Elements of IEPs and Transition Plans – 10 hr. field experience
  • SPE 637B Social Emotional Support and Mental Health – 10 hr. field experience
  • TCH 660B The Instructional Cycle: Teaching – 20 hr. field experience
  • TCH 660C The Instructional Cycle: Assessment – 20 hr. field experience 

Student teaching = 1 semester 

  • TCH 665 A Clinical Practice and Seminar – 1 full semester 

The online MAE Teacher Education degree is perfect for students who are bachelor’s degree holders looking to change careers or those who are already employed as paraprofessionals. Graduates of the program are prepared to earn their license to become teachers of students in grades 1-8.  As a student in the MAE Teacher Education program, you’ll integrate content, pedagogy and professional studies through dynamic classroom and applied learning experiences. Finish your online coursework, field experiences, and student teaching in about two years.  

Wisconsin DPI Licensure: Graduates are qualified for the Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence license.  

**To earn a teaching license, a graduate must seek licensure from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
